Project Benefits

29th March 2019

At a time when Australian customers are demanding lower power bills and Australia is transitioning to a greater number of renewable energy options, the proposed interconnector has been identified by ElectraNet as a way to meet these needs.

Construction of the proposed interconnector and linking the energy grids of South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria would facilitate energy exchange, leading to a more effective balancing of supply and demand. This means increased energy security and enhanced network reliability, critical factors in continuing to support prosperous communities, regions and cities.

To progress Project EnergyConnect to construction stage, there are a number of important steps that need to be completed. These include:

  • The Australian Energy Regulatory (AER) must decide whether the interconnector option will pass its Regulatory Investment Test for Transmission (RIT-T) and can proceed as a project.
  • Defining a potential route for the new transmission line.
  • Working with landholders to secure access for the Project.
  • Undertaking a number of major environmental and development assessment processes and securing a positive outcome from these assessment processes.

Community and stakeholder engagement will be a critical component of all Project stages.
